Bidding for ICYPAA

ICYPAA is the International Conference of Young People in AA. Each year, cities and regions from across the fellowship come together to “bid” to host a future ICYPAA. SCUBYPAA is the Southern California Unified Bid, which means we work together as one bid to bring ICYPAA to SoCal and carry the message of recovery to young alcoholics.

What Does It Mean to Bid for ICYPAA?

Bidding for ICYPAA is a service effort. A bid is a group of AA members who come together to show the ICYPAA Advisory Council that their area is ready to host the conference.

A bid usually:
• Forms a committee and holds regular business meetings
• Hosts local events to carry the message
• Builds unity with local AA service bodies
• Puts together a written bid book and a presentation for ICYPAA

The goal is not just to “win” a conference. The real purpose is to reach the still‑suffering alcoholic, especially young people, by creating strong, active service in our area.

What Is SCUBYPAA’s Role?

SCUBYPAA stands for Southern California Unified Bid for ICYPAA. Instead of multiple cities competing against each other, SoCal comes together as one unified bid.

SCUBYPAA:
• Brings together YPAA members from different SoCal areas
• Organizes events, workshops, and meetings focused on recovery and service
• Works with local districts, intergroups, and YPAA committees
• Prepares and presents the SoCal bid at ICYPAA

Everything we do is guided by AA’s Twelve Traditions and the primary purpose of carrying the message to the alcoholic who still suffers.

Why Does Bidding for ICYPAA Matter?

Bidding for ICYPAA matters because it:
• Creates more opportunities for young people to find AA
• Encourages service and unity across different areas
• Helps members grow through responsibility and commitment
• Keeps the spirit of ICYPAA alive between conferences

Even if our bid is not selected in a given year, the work we do still helps alcoholics in Southern California. The events, meetings, and connections we build continue to serve our local fellowship.

How Can I Get Involved?

You don’t need any experience to be part of SCUBYPAA or to help with the bid. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking, and the only requirement to serve is a willingness to show up.

You can:
• Attend SCUBYPAA business meetings
• Join a committee (hospitality, outreach, programming, etc.)
• Help at events (set‑up, greeting, registration, cleanup)
• Share your ideas and experience

Service in YPAA is a powerful way to stay connected, grow in recovery, and help the next person.

What Does a Bid Presentation Look Like?

At ICYPAA, each bid presents to the Advisory Council and the conference attendees. A bid presentation usually includes:
• A summary of the local AA community and support
• Information about the proposed host city and facilities
• Planning and responsibility for hosting the conference
• Examples of events and service work the bid has done
• A clear focus on carrying the AA message

Behind that presentation is a lot of quiet work: meetings, planning, outreach, and spiritual growth in service.
